Onion price hike: Street food stalls replace onion with cabbage


Kochi: The street food vendors in the city are trying new ways to replace onion in food as the price shot up recently. The onion price hike has been causing them huge loss. Earlier, onion was essential ingredient in chaat and omelette which cannot be seen these days. Now onion has been replaced with cabbage in many street food stalls.


The works in street food stalls starts with one or two onions every day. These onions are used only when customers demand it, said a food stall staff from Kadavanthra here. Cabbage is used even in omelettes instead of onions.

Onion was used lavishly in snacks like chaat and bhelpuri. But this also is replaced with cabbage. Majority of the food stall workers use cabbage instead of onions. They said that customers mostly do not recognise the taste of cabbage in omelettes.
